Knut Strom

ISHPEMING, MI – Knut Strom, age 91, longtime Ishpeming resident passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at Marquette County Medical Care Facility, where he had been a resident for 6 days.

Knut was born on the island of Joa [Norway] in the Fosnes commune, on December 20, 1929, to Trygve and Solveig (Breivik) Strom.

Knut attended school in Norway, and served in the Norwegian Navy in the 1950’s. Knut moved to the United States in 1957 and received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Michigan Tech University in 1960. Knut was hired by Upper Peninsula Power Company where he worked for 34 years, retiring as a power distribution engineer.

Knut was a member of the Ishpeming Lions Club, where he served as Past District Governor, VASA Lodge, Toastmasters International and the National Ski Hall of Fame, where he was on the Board of Directors.

Knut enjoyed biking and skiing and was proud of his Norwegian heritage.

Knut is survived by his wife: Rosemarie (Valente) Strom, whom he married on June 28, 1986, a David Strom, of Orlando, FL; a sister: Marie (Knut) Sandvik of Faksdal, Norway, nieces and nephews, stepchildren: Bridgette Allen, Madelyne Lawry, Frank (Barbara) Lawry, Julie (Patrick) Donahue, Bonny Henderson, step- grandchildren: John Allen, Broc (Megan) Lawry, Travis Lawry, Danielle and Anna Donahue, and a step-great-grandson: Beckam Lawry.

Knut was preceded in death by his parents, son: Tracy and grandson: Nash Kiebler.

Knut’s family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, on Friday September 17, 2021, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, where a memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Bruce Thorsen officiating.

Masks are recommended to be worn at Bethany Lutheran Church.

A Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Inurnment will take place in 2022, on the island of Joa in Norway where his mother and father are buried.

Memorials can be directed to St. Jude’s at stjude.org, the National Ski Hall of Fame or Bethany Lutheran Church in memory of Knut.
