Kay A. Mattson

NEGAUNEE, MI – Kay A. Mattson, age 88, longtime resident of 125 Mattson Road, Negaunee, passed away on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, in Ishpeming, where she was currently residing.

Kay was born in Callaway, MN, on February 13, 1933, a daughter of the late Selma (Janson) and Chester Jacobson. Kay’s biological mother died when she was 4, and subsequently she was raised in faith by the Jalmer and Dagmar Janson family in Strawberry Lake, MN. Kay was a graduate of the Waubun High School, Class of 1953 and moved to Minneapolis where she worked as a secretary. In the summer of 1955, Kay married Lawrence “Fudd” Mattson in Negaunee and resided here since. Kay was first a homemaker, raising her three kids, but also worked at the family construction business, Lakeland Construction for 35 years.

Kay enjoyed crocheting and quilting, along with board games, especially with her grandkids. She was Fudd’s comic side kick, always playing along with his many stories and jokes. Kay will be fondly remembered as a kind and loving soul. She was a member of Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church.

Kay is survived by a daughter – Suzanne (Matthew) Hepokoski of Grand Rapids, MN; two sons – Stuart Mattson of Tangier, Morocco and Mark Mattson of Negaunee; a half-brother – Curtis Hyink of Seattle, WA; 3 grandchildren – Adam, Mark (Rachel) and Joel Hepokoski, 2 great-grandchildren – Braden and Lauren Mattson; along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of brothers and sisters in faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband – Lawrence “Fudd” Mattson on March 3, 2020, a grandson – Ryan Mattson, a sister – Delores Hokkanen and a half-brother – Carl Albin.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 12:00pm, on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church, Co Rd 492, Negaunee. Funeral Services will follow at 12:00pm on Wednesday, at the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church with Dale Kemp officiating. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens. Pallbearers will be Adam, Mark and Joel Hepokoski and Branden Mattson.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Marquette Co Medical Care Facility along with Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice for their compassionate care of Kay.
