June E. Ackroyd

MARQUETTE, MI – June E. Ackroyd, age 80, of Marquette, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, February 18, 2021, at Norlite Nursing Center.

June was born April 22, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of Walter and Helen Ackroyd. June attended Browning Elementary and graduated from Willoughby North High School in Ohio. She earned a B.A. from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York; a Masters’ degree in Musicology, also at Eastman, and a PhD in Music Education at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio. She taught at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas for two years and several years at Plainview Elementary, Long Island, New York. The next three years were spent in Germany where she served as a music teacher for the Department of Defense while also enjoying touring Germany when not working. She later relocated to Marquette, teaching in the Music Department of Northern Michigan University. June had a huge, lifelong love of music, and performed in many Marquette area and Northern Michigan University concerts. She was a very active member of Messiah Lutheran Church where she sang in and directed the church choir for children and adults, while also tutoring. Both she and Leslie “Hook” enjoyed traveling around the country and since 2003, wintered in the South.

Survivors are her loving boss, Leslie “Hook” of Marquette; her brother, Herb (Joan) Ackroyd of Charlottesville, Virginia; her sister, Mary Jane Ackroyd of Stamford, Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Clare; and her brother, Thomas Ackroyd.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the NMU Music Department for Vocal Scholarships.

Friends may call at Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services on Tuesday, February 23, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Masks and social distancing are required.
