Edward J. Petroff

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI – Edward J. Petroff, age 92, of Crystal Falls, MI, passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2021, at Aspirus Iron River Hospital.

He was born on May 28, 1928, in Stambaugh Township, MI, the son of the late Ratko and Mary (Kavech) Petroff. Edward attended and graduated from the Stambaugh Schools, with the Class of 1946. He later attended Technical Training School at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI, receiving his Certification for Refrigeration and Heating. Edward was a U.S. Army veteran. He served in Seoul, Korea as patrol on the 38th Parallel from 1946-1948.

He was employed in the area mines, first for Pickands Mather and then for M.A. Hanna Mining Company. In 1968, he began his employment as a Telephone Technician for AT&T in Negaunee, MI. In 1989, he returned to Stambaugh Township, continuing to work for AT&T, SBC, and Ameritech, until his retirement in 1993.

Edward married the former Elizabeth Garavet on July 15, 1950, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, of Gaastra, MI and the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2020. They were avid travelers throughout 49 of the United States and seven provinces of Canada and Mexico.

He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian, MI, the Iron River Elks Lodge #1671 for many years, and he was a member of AARP.

Edward is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; children, Beth Marie (Peter) Meli of Negaunee, MI, Peggy Susan (Anthony) Nardi of Ishpeming, MI, and Edward Jon Petroff of Laurium, MI; brothers-in-law, James “Bucky” Garavet and Ronald Sherwood; eight grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Peter, George, and James, and his sisters, Mary, Margaret, Helen, and Suzanne.

Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery at a later date.
