Virginia “Ginny” “Toots” Cameron

Virginia Cameron

GWINN, MI – Virginia “Ginny” Mae (Koski) Cameron, 73, of Gwinn, fondly known to many as Toots or Tootsie, passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020, at the Trillium House in Marquette as a result of metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

Ginny was born on June 4, 1947, in Ishpeming, MI, to the late Toivo “Maggie” and Mae (Morin) Koski. Her family moved from Ishpeming to Gwinn when she was three. She graduated from Gwinn High School in 1965. Soon after high school, she moved to California where her brother, Dick, was stationed in the U.S. Navy. From there she went to Texas. She returned to Gwinn in 1977, where she resided until her death.

She worked at Mussatto’s IGA in Gwinn for many years, and after raising her children, Ginny went to Northern Michigan University and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked at various places before settling in at Cardiology Associates in Marquette where she worked for almost 19 years. The doctors and staff there became like family to her and she kept in touch with many of her “Cardiology Girls” after her retirement in 2015.

Ginny was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gwinn. She helped the St. Anthony Altar Society with funeral luncheons. In her retirement, she became a volunteer at the St. Francis Connection Center in K.I. Sawyer. She was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and got to attend a game at Comerica Park for her 70th birthday. Childhood stories tell of her being a fantastic baseball player in her youth in Finn Town where she was often picked before the boys.

She always said that her children were her biggest accomplishment in life and that she was most proud of them, but she was known for so much more than raising her kids. Throughout her whole life, Ginny was a giver; always doing for others and putting their needs before her own. She had a heart of gold and was kind to everyone. She attended all of her grandkids’ school and sporting events and enjoyed taking her granddog, Oscar, for a car ride everyday.

Ginny is survived by her children, Scott (Michele) Cameron of Gwinn and Hope (Peter) Bruce of Arnold; her brother, Mike (Sue) Koski of Gwinn; sisters-in-law, Kathy (James) Martin of Ransom Canyon, TX, and Jean Watkins of Fairfield, TX; grandchildren, Andy (Kassondra) Cameron, Elizabeth Cameron, Amanda Tritt, Chris Tritt, Morgan (Matt) Schultz, Mason Bruce (fiance, Dani Wasson), and Brenna Bruce; nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was blessed to have several close friends including Gail Kluetsch, Sue Heinz, Barb Campbell, Linda Daugherty, and her best friend, her sister-in-law, Sue Koski. She also kept in touch with her lifelong friends Nona, Ticky, and Sid. She was looking forward to the arrival of Andy & Kass’s little one in June and to Mason and Dani’s wedding in September.

Ginny leaves behind her beloved cats, Jasmine and Grace.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Carmen Koski, and by her brother, Larry Koski.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, January 8th, from 10 am to noon in the Education Wing at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gwinn. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at noon with her dear friend, the Very Rev. Allen Mott officiating. Her Funeral Mass will be live streamed on the St. Anthony Catholic Church, Gwinn, Michigan Facebook page. Interment will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery in the spring.

Facemasks & social distancing will be required.
