Gloria Bell Baker

MARQUETTE, MI – Gloria Bell Baker, age 89, of Marquette, passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at home, in the loving, comforting care of her family and UP Home Health and Hospice.

Gloria was born April 4, 1931, in L’Anse and attended the L’Anse High School. She was raised in L’Anse and Iron Mountain by her maternal aunt, Rene Querio, and moved to Marquette with her cousin, Delores, when she was 15. Her working career began at age 16, when she began working at Marquette’s Bon-Ton Cafe. She was later employed with Michigan Bell Telephone Company as an operator for two years. While with Bell Telephone, Gloria was named “Miss Michigan Belle”, an honor which included her photo in the local Mining Journal. On August 7, 1948, Gloria was united in marriage to Alvin Baker in Marquette. Together the couple established a home and raised five daughters. A devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, Gloria enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading and was a connoisseur of chocolate. Gloria will be missed dearly and remembered most for her generous and loving nature.

Gloria is survived by her husband of 72 years, Alvin Baker; her daughters, Julie (Michael) Kunick of Grand Prairie, TX, Cynthia (George) Wagner of DePere, WI, Joanne Monty of Sands, Suzanne (Geoffrey) Mills of Gwinn, and Vicki Puz of Bay City; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a brother, Lawrence Rose.

Gloria was preceded in death by her mother, Ardell Rochon; a grandson, Joshua Lehigh; an infant granddaughter, Alisa and two infant great-grandchildren, Trevor and Madison.

The family will celebrate her life with private family services. A special thank you to her husband, Alvin Baker, her daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Geoffrey Mills, and granddaughter, Natalie Mills for their unwavering devotion and care to their wife, mother and grandmother in her final days of her life.
