Douglas Higgs

MARQUETTE, MI – Douglas Eugene Higgs, age 72, a resident of the Jacobetti Home for Veterans, and former Mason, Michigan resident, entered eternal life Saturday, November 14, 2020, at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

Born April 5, 1948, in Mason, a son of James and Bessie (Purvis) Higgs, Doug was raised in Mason and graduated from Mason High School, Class of 1966. Immediately upon graduation, Doug was hired and trained as a truck repairman with General Motors in Lansing. In 1968, he was drafted into the US Army and served during the Vietnam period. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to work for General Motors, retiring after 30 years of service to the corporation. Following retirement, Doug worked a few more years at the Lansing 7-11. A social person by nature, he greatly enjoyed the interaction of working at the counter and assisting customers. In his leisure moments, he enjoyed watching boxing, studying the Bible, loved music and enjoyed playing guitar, often making up his own lyrics as he played. He was an avid Michigan State University athletics fan. While residing at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans, he developed a love of hockey due to the outings at NMU hockey games.

Doug is survived by his children, daughter, Lisa (Roy) Nelson of Gladstone and their children, Adam, Makenzie, and Maren; step-children, Maleyna (Garrett Feathers) Nelson and Roy Nelson IV; son, Steven (Cheryl) Higgs of Decatur, IL and their children, Sam and Lila Higgs; a brother, Larry (Judy) Higgs of Mason; sister-in-law, Joyce Higgs of Michigan/Georgia; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucy; second wife, Tammy; and twin brother, David Higgs.

Interment will be made in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Mason, Michigan.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and members of the Jacobetti Home for Veterans for their compassionate and professional care of Doug and for the many kindnesses extended to the family. Because of you, his quality of life was greatly enriched.
