Doreen (Guider) Volkema

Doreen was born in Birmingham, England, on November 29, 1923, to John and Bertha Guider. She married, James Russell Volkema, on May 21, 1944, in Birmingham, England. She then traveled to America with the war brides in February 1946 with baby son, Martyn. Her and James lived in Cedar Springs, Michigan, where her second son. Anthony was born in July 1946. They then moved to Holland, Michigan, where her two daughters, Lorna and Berri were born. In April 1958, they moved to Deerton, where they owned and operated the Laughing Whitefish Resort on the Whitefish River, later moving to Shot Point. In 1977, they moved to Fort Myers, Florida and lived there until 1988.

Doreen was a member of the New Apostolic Church.

She is survived by her two daughters; Lorna Ternus and Berri Honeycutt, both of Marquette, 5 grandchildren; Vicki (Bill) Fawcett of Marquette, Jeffrey Prisk of Negaunee, Timothy (Jenny Klyk) Prisk of Marquette, Jody (Travis) Hinman of Mills, MA and Scott (Kimberly) Ternus of Detroit, MI, 8 great-grandchildren; Katie (Dan) Nelson, Cody (Jodi) Prisk, Adam (Katy) Prisk, Matt Fawcett, James Burns, Molly Burns, Sophia Ternus, and John Hinman and 4 great-great- grandchildren. She is also survived by a special niece, Diane Riemersma of Holland, MI.

Doreen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James Volkema in 2004, son; Anthony in 1958, son; Martyn in 2019 and brother; Dennis in 2018.

There will be no services at this time. The family will plan a special memorial for the Spring. Donations may be directed to UPAWS.
