Grant L. Kratz

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Grant Leo Kratz, 54, passed away on October 2, 2020, in Alexandria, Virginia, following a brief illness.

Grant was born in California, but spent most of his childhood in Negaunee and Suomi location. Grant had a distinguished military career, joining the Air Force after graduation from Brigham Young University with a Law Degree. The Air Force led he and his family to a variety of locations across the US including Texas, California, Mississippi and Colorado. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served as a Military Judge at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

After retirement, he moved to the Washington, DC area where he continued his successful career as an attorney, specializing in Environmental Law with the Department of Defense.

Grant had been very active with the Marquette area LDS community and the Affirmation (LGBTQ for Mormons, Family and Friends) organization. He was well respected and loved by his many co-workers who had the honor of serving with him and becoming his friends.

He is mourned by his beloved children, Joshua and Corinda Kratz; siblings, Roxie (Jeff) Hecker, Elizabeth (Don) Brown, Joe (Becky Maino) Kratz and Valerie Kratz-Parkkonen; his former wife, Melanie Montgomery; his dear friend and niece, Heather Spencer: and his dear great-nephew, Laurence Joseph Whitney. He was blessed with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews whom he adored.

Grant was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Barbara (Young) Kratz; his partner, Stephen Langley;as well as a great-niece, Lillian Miller. His sister, Marie Kratz Spencer passed away recently on October 17, 2020.

Grant is expected to be interred in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
