Robert E. Swanson

MARQUETTE, MI – Robert Edward Swanson, age 70, of Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday, September 15, 2020, at his home.

Born November 5, 1949, in Marquette, a son of Maxwell and Helen (Gustavson) Swanson, Bob was a lifelong Marquette resident. He graduated from Marquette Senior High School, Class of 1968, and soon after enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he served during Vietnam. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, Bob returned to Marquette and enrolled at Northern Michigan University, pursuing an Associate Degree in Drafting. Following graduation, Bob was employed at the East Side IGA and the Spot Convenience Store before working for the City of Marquette Engineering Department. Bob then transferred to the Marquette Board of Light and Power, retiring following over 25 years of service.

Bob was an exceptionally active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and on the Building and Grounds Committee. Additionally, Bob was a life member of Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion and the Marquette Regional History Center. In his younger years, Bob belonged to several bowling and pool leagues. Family was all important to Bob and he especially loved time spent with his grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his wife of 40 years, Crystal (Maki) Swanson; his son, Wesly (Joy) Swanson of Ishpeming and his daughter, Amanda (Stacy) Fruehling of Marquette; three grandchildren, Maxwell, Gabrielle, and Emmalynn Swanson; a brother, Charles (Bonnie) Swanson of Marquette; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Maki of Marquette; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and father-in-law, Albert Maki.

Private family services will be held.

Interment will be made in the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden.
