John E. 'Yogi' Carlson

ISHPEMING, MI – John E. “Yogi” Carlson, age 72, of 806 N. Second St. Ishpeming passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at his home while under the loving care of his family and UP Home Health and Hospice.

John was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on May 7, 1948, a son of the late Elaine Grace (Maki) and John Peter Carlson. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1966, and received his welding certificate from Northern Michigan University.

Yogi worked for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for 31 years at the Republic Mine, Brownstone Shop, retiring from Empire Mine. Most recently, he served as the Marquette County Mine Inspector for 20 years.

Yogi was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and the former Tomahawk Archery Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball, umpiring, throwing horseshoes and spending time at camp. He was an avid Hematite fan, attending many games and even traveling downstate for all of their state championship games. Yogi was a fixture at many local establishments, particularly the Congress and Sherri’s restaurant.

Yogi is survived by a daughter, Sarah Carlson, of Farmington Hills, MI. a son, Kevin (Sabina) Carlson, of Negaunee, 4 Grandchildren: Josie, Jay, Katie and Eli, two brothers, Peter (Cathy) Carlson, of Ishpeming, and Ross (Barb) Carlson, of Ishpeming, sister in law: Sharon (Rick) Engstrom of Alpena, MI, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Yogi was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife Sandi, a brother Norman, a sister Ann Marie LaCosse, and an infant son Ethan.

Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, a Private graveside service will be held at the Ishpeming Cemetery with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating.

A Celebration of Yogi’s Life will be held at a later date.
