MARQUETTE, MI – Christine Kenney, age 90, of Marquette, left this earth for a higher plane on Monday, August 17, 2020, at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care Unit.
Born February 26, 1930, in Detroit, daughter of Christ and Dorothy (Masek) Carvunaris. Christine was raised in Detroit and graduated from Denby High School. Christine completed graduate and post graduate work at Oakland University. While attending university, she married and began raising her family. Her teaching career began in Clawson, Michigan, where she taught fourth grade, and continued in Ovid-Elsie Consolidated Schools where she taught junior high English. She retired in the early 1980’s. Christine relocated to Marquette in 2011. Throughout her lifetime, Christine was creative, passionate, and possessed a strong sense of social justice and was known to be a women’s rights activist. She was a member of the University of Michigan Travel Club and enjoyed traveling all over the world. In her leisure, she also enjoyed ballroom dancing and quilting.
Christine is survived by her children, David R. Kenney of East Lansing, Cindy (Robert) Sloat of Harrison Township, and Kate (Kevin Salmela) Kenney of Marquette; her grandchildren, Adrianne and Matthew, Allison and Tim, and Jeremy; great-granddaughter, Geneva.
She was preceded in death by her father, Christ Carvunaris; mother, Dorothy Tobien; brother, Thomas Carvunaris; and former husband of 41 years, Donald D. Kenney.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staffs of Brookridge Heights and Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice for their compassionate and professional care, and for the many kindnesses extended to the family.
