Kurt Pietila

PALMER, MI – Kurt William Pietila, 65, of Palmer, passed away peacefully at home early Tuesday morning, June 30, 2020 while in the care of his loving family.

Kurt was born October 13, 1954 on Elmendorf Air Force Base in Achorage, Alaska to William R. and Doreen E. ‘Betty’ (Kangas) Pietila and graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1973. Following graduation, Kurt enjoyed living and travelling in the western US prior to beginning his employment career in the UP. He worked for CCI at the Mather ‘B’ Mine, Ropes Gold Mine, and recently retired from A & L Iron and Metal Company.

Kurt was a member of the Richmond Township Community Club where he enjoyed socializing. He enjoyed horseback riding in his younger years with his brothers, fishing, gardening, and loved spending time at the family camp on Lake Superior with his family and friends.

Surviving are his three sons: Cory (Denise) Arbelius of Palmer, Shawn Pietila of Suomi Location and Troy Pietila of Palmer; his daughter, Krista Pietila of Marquette; his friend and mother of his children, Darlene (Sikkila) Pietila; his beloved granddaughter, Kinzleigh Ann Pietila; two brothers: Craig (Cathy) and Kevin (Angie) Pietila, both of Suomi Location; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his longtime companion, Marie Aho.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4-7 pm on Saturday, July 11 at the Richmond Township Community Club. Interment will take place in Bakkala Cemetery.
