MOUNT CLEMENS, MI – Elaine Marie Winkler, age 83, a resident of Mount Clemens, Michigan passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2020. She was born on March 8, 1937 in Greenville, MI to parents of Danish descent, Luther and Rita (Petersen) Rasmussen. Elaine was very proud of her Danish heritage and took her family to the Greenville Danish Festival every summer. On June 20, 1959 she was united in marriage to Robert H. Winkler. Together they had three children, Alexandra, Neil and Adam. Last year, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Elaine formerly worked as a substitute teacher for Mt. Clemens Public Schools and later taught full-time in the L’Anse Creuse School District. Majoring in Journalism and English at Western Michigan University laid the foundation for her passion in poetry. Elaine belonged to the Springfed Writers, as well as a poetry group in Troy, MI where they gathered to write, evaluate, and publish poems. Accompanying her husband to England who worked as an exchange teacher in the 1960’s, Elaine developed a love of traveling. She and Robert traveled to Hawaii, out west, the east coast, and many times to Stratford, Ontario to enjoy the Shakespeare Festival. She also visited Italy and Europe many times and they became two of her favorite travel destinations. Elaine was a great cook, loved her daffodils, and enjoyed watching her feathered friends by keeping the feeder well stocked for the neighborhood birds.

She is survived by her husband Robert, daughter Alexandra (Hans) Houston, sons Neil (Laurie) Winkler, MD, Adam (April) Winkler, DDS, sisters Eleanor (Arthur) Korroch, Joyce (George) Berzins, grandchildren Nelson (Erin) Winkler, MD, Max (fiancee Jillian) Winkler, MD, Nathaniel Winkler, Jacob Winkler and two great-grandchildren Florence and William. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Rita Rasmussen, older brother Lewis Rasmussen, and younger sisters Marianna (Al) Olson and Jeanne (Terry) Dart.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at 9:30a.m. in the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, 140 South Main Street, Mt. Clemens. Friends are welcome to continue visiting until 12 Noon. Memorial donations in memory of Elaine may be sent to the American Diabetes Association.
