MUNISING, MI – Robert “Bob” Charboneau, age 87, of Munising, died Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He was born on December 14, 1932 in Cheboygan, Michigan the second of seven children to Lawrence and Agnes (Hebert) Charboneau. Bob grew up in the Cheboygan area until his family moved to Munising his sophomore year. He graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1951.

Bob began working for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. in Munising before he was drafted into the U.S. Army in March of 1953. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean War.

Bob was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged in March of 1955 as a Corporal. He returned to work at the saw mill for CCI. Bob married Sally Tromater on September 21, 1957. Shortly after their wedding, Bob and Sally moved to Covina, California where he began working as a mason, and they began raising their family. The family moved back to Munising in 1965. Bob was hired at Kimberly-Clark in January of 1966.

He worked in the Specialties Department almost his entire twenty-five years of service at the mill retiring as a rewinder operator in June of 1991.

Bob enjoyed rabbit hunting with his dog Spike, ice fishing, playing horseshoes, trips to the casino, watching NASCAR with Tim, and cheering on his beloved Packers. He was a member of the American Legion Post 131.

Bob is survived by his wife of over sixty-two years – Sally Charboneau of Munising; children – Roberta “Bertie” (Jim) Dempsey of Green Bay, WI, Kristina “Kris” (Todd) Lintula of Eben Junction, and Tim (Billie) Charboneau of St. Joseph, MO; grandchildren – Adam (Mel), Troy (Jessica) and Kurt (Lana) Dempsey, Ashley (Tyler) Ketzler, Garrett Vieth, and Joshua (Sarah) and Cole Charboneau; seven great-grandchildren with one on the way; siblings – Dale (Connie) Charboneau of Munising, Gary (Barbara) Charboneau of Pollock Pines, CA, Joyce McGrath of Enid, OK, Sandra Charboneau of Grayling, MI and Larry Charboneau of Chatham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents – Lawrence and Agnes; infant daughter – Lisa Kay Chaboneau; sister – Dorothy (John) Bourgeois; and brother-in-law -Benny McGrath.

Graveside services will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery this summer where the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
