Gene A. O’Neill

Born March 13, 1936, in Marquette, a son of Lloyd and Florence (Everson) O’Neill. Gene was raised and went to school in Marquette, and worked for Bunny Bread for ten years. He was proud to be a Union Carpenter and Millwright with the Carpenters Local 1510 for 50 years. As a kid, Gene played hockey for the Marquette Sentinels and coached hockey in later years. He was an overall outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and boating. As a fisherman, he was exceptionally good at fly tying.

Gene is survived by his daughters; Gwen Cleary of Arizona and Merri (Steve) Burby of Iron Mountain, a son; Darren O’Neill of Negaunee; his grandchildren; Erin, Keira, Sean, Jasyn, Callista, and Katrina; 8 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Connie (Jim) Green of Manitowoc, WI, Donna (Delbert) Weymouth of Marquette, and Bonnie (Alan) Thielbar of Two Rivers, WI; a brother, Lloyd “Bucky” (Maria) O’Neill of Gwinn; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marlene J. Christianson (O’Neill) in 2007; his second wife, Betty M. Hokenson (O’Neill) in 2016; and a son, Gene O’Neill, Jr. in 2008.

A memorial service and burial will be held in the spring of 2020 and will be announced.
