John Westman

AUSTIN, MI – John L. Westman, 67, of Austin, died Friday morning, November 22, 2019, at the Lighthouse at Ishpeming.

He was born January 31, 1952 in Marquette, Michigan, a son of John A. and Jean (Albright) Westman. He was a 1970 graduate of Gwinn High School and a lifelong area resident.

John enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing at the family camp on Iron Pin Road. He loved to play Santa for family and friends at Christmas. The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department recognized his compassion for others when he received their “Outstanding Citizen Award” in 1984. He will be remembered as the type of guy that was everyone’s “Buddy.”

He is survived by three children, John L. (Kimberly) Westman Jr. of Clinton Township, MI, Tiffany L. (SitaRam) Ghattamaneni of Clinton Township, and Ben E. (Marie Schaefer) Westman of Gwinn; grandchildren, Gita Leigh and Jairam Ghattamaneni, Kaine, Justice, Arianna, and Jaya Collins; mother, Jean Albright of Kenosha, WI; siblings, Mike Westman of Florida, Judy Griffith and Linda Lopez, both of Kenosha; special friends, Linda Barrett of Marquette and Joey D’Ambrosio of Gwinn; and sister-in-law, Helen Barrett of Menominee.

He was preceded in death by his father; stepmother, Barb “Momma Moo” Westman; sisters, Alice Soderberg and Barbara Kerr; and brother-in-law, Ron Griffith.

John’s family would like to thank the staff of the Lighthouse at Ishpeming for the wonderful care they provided.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 4:30 pm in the Canale-Gwinn Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Westman officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 pm until the time of the service in the funeral home. Interment will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery in the spring.
