Marion ‘Ruth’ Nykanen

MARQUETTE, MI – Marion “Ruth” Nykanen, age 91, current Mill Creek Senior Living Community resident and longtime Negaunee Twp. resident passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Mill Creek while under the loving care of her family, staff at Mill Creek and the U. P. Home Health and Hospice.

Marion was born in Ishpeming April 18, 1928, the daughter of the late Jennie (Hill) and Alfred Micklow. She grew up in Humboldt Township and was a graduate of the Champion High School, Class of 1945. After graduation Ruth was employed at Michigan Bell. She married Paul Nykanen on July 23, 1952 and they were longtime Negaunee Twp. residents. Paul preceded her in death in 1999. Ruth then resided at Tourville in Marquette for many years. She was a member of Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church. Marion enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren along with sewing and spending several winters in Florida with her husband.

Marion is survived by a sister, Audrey Marcotte of Marquette; two sons, Steven Nykanen of Ishpeming and Neil (Carol) Nykanen of Marquette; a daughter, Judy (Jon) Anderson of Otsego, MN; grandchildren – Jenny (Brian) Johnson, Nathan (Alyssa) Anderson, Alyssa and Elina Nykanen, Andrew (Rachel) Nykanen, Matthew and Joshua Nykanen; great grandchildren – Ella, Isaac and Juliet; along with several nieces and nephews and a host of brothers and sisters in faith. In addition to her husband, Marion was preceded in death by a sister Mildred Micklow and an infant brother Norman.

Marion’s family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am – 12:00pm on Monday, September 23, 2019 at the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church, Co. Rd 492, Negaunee where funeral services will follow at Noon on Monday with Dan Hintsala to officiate. A luncheon will follow the services at the church. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.
