Peter Braamse

MARQUETTE, MI – Peter C. “Pete” Braamse, age 88, of Marquette, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 8, 2019 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had been a resident for two years.

Born December 21, 1930, in Marquette, to Byron and Edna (Brown) Braamse, Pete was raised in Escanaba, where he graduated from Escanaba High School, Class of 1949. Later that year, Pete entered the US military, serving with the US Army primarily in Germany, during the Korean Conflict. Upon his honorable discharge in 1953, Pete married his childhood sweetheart, Peg Nicholson, on October 17, 1953, in Dearborn. The two met years earlier in the 1940’s when they were children at his parent’s beach resort at Rock River in Alger County.

Shortly after getting married, Pete enrolled at Northern Michigan University, under the GI Bill, graduating in 1959 with a degree in conservation. He was a good mechanic when he met Peg, and together the couple started the Marquette Bus Service in 1970, the precursor to MarqTran. They ran the company for thirteen years before selling. Pete then worked as a self-employed carpenter until retiring in 2010. In his spare time, Pete enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, sailing, building wooden boats, and gardening.

Pete is survived by his sons, Leonard (Susan) Braamse and John (Donna) Braamse; his grandson, Johnny and his granddaughter, Jadzia; his sister, Mary (Braamse) Edgar; nieces, Susan (Braamse) Obradovich, Catherine and Anne Edgar; his nephew, Jack Braamse; and his beloved cat, “Bud”.

In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Peg; and his younger brother, William “Bill” Braamse.

Honoring Pete’s request, a Celebration of Life will be forthcoming for family and friends at a date to be determined.
