Christie Salo

NEGAUNEE, MI – Christie L. (Dahlstrom) Salo, age 76, of 196 Kivela Road in Negaunee, MI, passed away Wednesday morning, February 6, 2019 at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

She was born on August 18, 1942 in Ishpeming to Delbur and Margaret (Anderson) Dahlstrom. Christie was baptized at Bethany Lutheran Church in Negaunee in 1942. She was a graduate of Negaunee High School and was employed by W.A. Nudge M & D. The former Christie L. Dahlstrom married Richard “Dick” L. Salo on September 2, 1961 at Bethany Lutheran Church. Together, the couple shared 57 years of marriage and had 3 sons, Richard “Rick”, Tom, and Gary. Throughout the years, Christie and Dick also welcomed over 100 foster children into their home and were blessed with a son and daughter they considered their own, Hope and Tony. Christie loved being a mom and together, she and Dick, participated in all of their children’s activities and athletic events. Christie was the “inventor” of the footballs and basketballs which proudly hang outside of athlete’s homes in Negaunee. She began this tradition in the 1980’s when her sons were involved in Negaunee athletics. She was employed at Bridges and Collins Law Firm for 18 years and later was the Director of the Negaunee Senior Center from 1992 until her retirement in 2006. In her retirement years, Christie and Dick spent many happy days in their travel trailer. She served on the Negaunee Community Foundation Board, the Marquette County Senior Advisory Committee, a member of the Love Inc. Development Board, the Marquette County Commission on Aging, volunteered at Room at the Inn, and was a lifetime active member at Bethany Lutheran Church in Negaunee as a Sunday school teacher, served on the Social Ministry Committee, and the church council. Christie’s greatest passion in life, besides her husband and children, was to help others. She found happiness in serving meals for Room at the Inn and also at the Warming Center. Her children and grandchildren were wonderful blessings she was forever thankful for.

Christie L. Salo is survived by husband, Richard Salo of Negaunee, MI; sons, Rick (April) Salo of Negaunee, Tom (Sherry) Salo of Gladstone, Gary (Lori) of Escanaba, Tony Madosh (Cherie Recore) of Berlin, WI; daughter, Hope (Rico) Torreano of Marquette; grandchildren, Garrin, Gabrianna, Kara, Regan, Jennifer, and Sarah; sisters, Judi Adaminni, and Barbara (Dennis) Filizetti; brothers, Ted (Julie) Dahlstrom, and Dan (Diane) Dahlstrom; sister-in-law, Vicki-Ann (James) Massey; and many nieces and nephews.
