William Glenn Marlor

Glenn was born January 25, 1926, to the late William Marlor and Fay (McPhail) Marlor in Houghton, Michigan. He attended the Ripley School and graduated from Hancock High School. During World War II, Glenn served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator on the oil tanker Neshanik. After the war, Glenn went into the commercial fishing business with his friend, Ronald Strong and their boat the Vic. While fishing out of Copper Harbor, Glenn met, Evelyn Williams, while she was waitressing at the Isle Royale Dining Room restaurant. Glenn and Evelyn married in 1955 and raised four children Bill, Gale, Bob, and Dan in Pontiac and Grandville, MI.

Glenn’s vocation was fire protection engineer, but his avocation was boating and fishing on the great lakes. He had a great lakes boat for all but a few years of his adult life. Family outings for Glenn and Evelyn and their kids were typically on the water in places like Isle Royale, Houghton, Charlevoix, Saugatuck, Chicago, the Door Peninsula, and all ports between.

Glenn loved ice hockey and the Red Wings, and he flooded an ice rink in the backyard in Grandville. He played organized hockey into his fifties, and his sons played in high school and afterward.

Although he lived in the Grand Rapids area for most of his life, Glenn never lost his affection for the Copper Country in the Upper Peninsula; he was a Yooper to the end. Family vacations that were not on a boat, were spent travelling across “da bridge” to go “up home”.

Glenn had a kind, affable, easy going nature and he will be dearly missed by his friends and family. His endearing sense of humor provided levity to any situation, from a long boring ride across the Seney stretch, to a stomach churning rough weather crossing from Copper Harbor to Isle Royale.

In his final years as his health declined Glenn’s daughter, Gale cared for him in her home. Glenn was incredibly grateful to Gale for her loving care, and Gale’s recent passing saddened him deeply.

Glenn was preceded in death by his wife; Evelyn (Williams) Marlor, his daughter; Galeann McPhail, his niece; Kathleen Dodge, and his granddaughter; Erin Huizen.

He is survived by his sons; Bill Marlor of Hancock, Bob (Donna) Marlor of Marquette, and Dan (Patti) Marlor of Holland; his sister, Janice Peterson and nephew, Gordon Dodge of Houghton; his grandchildren, Katy (Nathan Manser), Lea, and Jordan Marlor, Rick Huizen, and Ben, Hannah, and Lucas Marlor; and his great- grandchildren, Eliza, William, Jaikob, and Clayton.
