Thomas T. Hughes

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Thomas T. Hughes, age 91, passed away peacefully at home on July 28, 2018.

Tom was born on May 8, 1927, in Marquette to Catherine (Gaspar) and Thomas(Cracker) Hughes, and lived his childhood in Ishpeming. He enlisted in the Navy, served in World War II and attended the University of Michigan. Upon receiving his degree the Army Map Service and spent two years in Washington, D.C. He was then sent to Rome, Italy where he met his future wife, Penny Hughes. For the next thirty-five years, they spent most his career overseas on various assignments with DMATC, AMS, TOPOCOM, and DMA-IAGS, which took them to several countries: Spain, Iran, Panama, Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay and Costa Rica. In 1994, they decided to retire in San Antonio, after 44 years of government service. In their twenty some years in San Antonio, they hosted two reunions: one for the 50th anniversary of IAGS, and one for all their friends during their tour in Paraguay.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Penny Hughes. Tom is survived by his two daughters, Romaine Hughes and Lesley Hughes; two grandchildren, Dr. Kristopher Aghemo and Andrea Cox; three great grandchildren, Natalie, TJ and Brinley; and his sister, Elizabeth P. Hughes.

Interment will take place at Ishpeming Cemetery on Aug. 28th at 10 a.m.
