MARQUETTE, MI – Aghasi T. Manukyan, 50, of Marquette, a World Greco-Roman wrestler and former assistant coach for the Greco-Roman program at Northern Michigan University – Olympic Training Site, unexpectedly passed away on Monday, March 19, 2018.

Aghasi was born on March 27, 1967 in Leninakan, Soviet Armenia to Tsolak and Silvia Manukyan.

Aghasi competed in Greco-Roman for Armenia and the former Soviet Union. He was an Espoir World champion for the Soviet Union in 1987. He competed in three World Championships. He won a World gold medal at 57kg in his first World Championships competing for Armenia as an independent nation. He was second in the 1995 European Championships. Aghasi competed in the 1996 Olympic Games representing Armenia.

After his competitive career ended, Aghasi started a coaching career in Armenia, working with junior athletes and other top competitors. He was hired as an assistant coach for the Greco-Roman program at NMU-OTS in 2011 and worked there through 2016 alongside NMU-OTS head coach, Rob Hermann. He helped develop numerous champion athletes at NMU, not only within USA Wrestling’s age group programs but also on the senior level.

Aghasi often took teams of NMU-OTS wrestlers overseas for competitions and training.

He leaves behind his wife, Vata; and three sons, Tsolak, Narek and Johnny.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 26, 2018 at 1 p.m. in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Tooman officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in the Park Cemetery.
