Tauno E. ‘TJ’ Johnson

MARQUETTE, MI – Tauno E. “TJ” Johnson, age 98, of Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday evening, December 31, 2017, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

Born August 10, 1919, in Forest Lake, a son of Alex and Celia (Ross) Johnson, Tauno grew up in a large family on a small family farm that offered the family some self-sufficiency. In 1938, he moved to Marquette where he later married the former Amy Rosa Connor in Marquette. Tauno entered the US Army on November 1, 1944, serving during World War II in Central Europe, until his honorable discharge on January 16, 1946. Returning to Marquette, he was employed for over 24 years with Marquette General Hospital, retiring in 1983 as director of logistics. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Richard Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion. In his leisure, Tauno enjoyed volunteering with Meals On Wheels and for the Salvation Army. His other hobbies and interests included watching baseball, especially the Chicago Cubs, being a Packer backer, spending time with family and friends, and volunteering where he could be of service.

Survivors include his son, Terrance “Terry” (Grace) Johnson of Marquette; grandchildren, DeAnna (Tim) Ciucci of Marquette and Lance Johnson of Kalamazoo; son-in-law, Paul DuNard of Cypress, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Tauno was preceded in death by his wife, Amy on June 12, 2005; daughter, Trudy DuNard; and his siblings, Amelia O’Neill, Emma Johnson, Ailie Hakala, Lillian Klimaszewski, Elaine Hase, Alex Jr, Walter, Vaino, Leslie, and Toivo Johnson.

Friends may call at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home on Friday, January 5, beginning at 1:00 pm until the time of service at 2:00 pm Friday afternoon. Pastor D. Michael Carriere will officiate. Members of Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion will render veterans honors. A reception will follow in the reception room located at the funeral home.

Interment will be made in the Park Cemetery.
