Janet Louise Barnett

Janet Louise Barnett

SKANDIA, MI – Janet Louise Barnett, age 67, of Skandia, entered eternal life Tuesday evening, January 23, 2018, at the home of her granddaughter in Gwinn. She was surrounded and in the loving care of her family and UP Home Health and Hospice.

Born June 1, 1950, in Marquette, a daughter of Carl and Bertha (Viger) Johnson, Janet was raised on the family farm in Skandia, where she learned the value of hard work and developed a strong work ethic. She attended schools in Marquette and Gwinn, and completed her education years later by receiving her GED from the Gwinn High School, graduating with her daughter. On January 14, 1967, Janet married Orville D. Barnett, and together the couple established a home and raised their family in Skandia. Throughout the years, Janet and Orville also opened their home to several foster children through the Family Independence Agency. Orville worked in the woods and later owned and operated Barnett Logging for about eight years. Janet was at his side, working in the woods and serving as his business secretary. For many years, she was employed as a bus driver with MarqTran and later as a cashier at Mares Z Doats. Janet enjoyed all that nature had to offer and, along with Orville, mentored her children and grandchildren in a respect for nature and how to enjoy it. She enjoyed farming with its cows and chickens, joined Orville on hunting treks, loved a good game of cribbage, and enjoyed country western music and listening to Elmer Aho. However, family was always her priority and the grandchildren especially brought special pleasures. She was compassionate, but could be very spontaneous, and you never knew what she’d come up with. She will be missed for just being the special person she was.

Janet is survived by her children, Karla Weeks of Skandia and Ken (Janice) Barnett of Gwinn; her grandchildren, Nicole (Robert) Lemay, Dustin Barnett, Devin Barnett, Kyle Weeks, Emily Barnett; great-grandchildren, Robert Lemay Jr, Starr Lemay, Gage Gadberry, Ryann Gadberry, Aubree Gadberry; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her canine companion, Pistol.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville in 2007; and a brother, Leslie Johnson.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Saturday, January 27, during the hours of 11:00 am until 2:00 pm for an informal time of memories, having a light snack, and conversation. Interment will be made in the Emanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, with her husband, in the spring.
