David A. Basal

MARQUETTE, MI – Lifelong Marquette resident David Arlen Basal, age 84, entered eternal life Monday, October 30, 2017, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.

Born December 5, 1932, in Marquette, a son of Otto and Thelma (Peterson) Basal, Dave was raised in Marquette and graduated from John D. Pierce High School in 1952. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict.

Returning to Marquette following his honorable discharge, he began an over thirty year career with Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company as an electrician, until his retirement.

In his spare time, Dave was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and a little fishing.

He, however, lived for trapping and caught many beaver and muskrat, etc over the years to prove his skill at the sport. Dave also had a fascination with old cars, himself owning a 1930 Model A and a 1915 Model T. A member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Dave also belonged to the Superior A Club and served as president of the UP Trapper’s Association, District 5 for over 20 years.

Survivors include his son, Stephen (Michele) Basal of Marquette; his daughter, Alice (Ron) Bessert of Allegan; his grandchildren, Lucas Basal of Marquette, Kristen (Larry) Sailors of Comstock Park and Heather Bessert of Allegan; and his sister, Diane Rivord of Rancho Cucamonga, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Louise Basal.

Friends may call at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Monday, November 6, beginning at 11:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 noon. Rev. Chad Ott, pastor, will officiate. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
