Janina Majkowski

MARQUETTE, MI – Janina Majkowski, age 98, of Marquette, went home to be with the Lord, with the love of her family, on Wednesday morning, March 15, 2017, at the Norlite Nursing Center.

Janina was born November 29, 1918 in the Bronx, New York, a daughter of Wladyslaw and Annie (Czezyck) Gudewicz. At the age of two, the family moved to Poland where Janina was raised. In 1938, Janina returned to the United States, entering through Ellis Island, New York, and settling in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1940, Janina married Michael Lazeren and together the couple established their home and had four children, Michael, Dimitrie “Mitch”, Stanley, and Richard Lazeren. In addition to being a homemaker, Janina loved gardening, quilting, and always caring for others. She was employed with the Aetna Insurance Company for a brief time before beginning a 33 year employment with the Pratt-Whitney Aircraft Company. On February 10, 1951, Janina married Edward Majkowski. Janina retired in 1981. Following the death of her husband, Edward, on February 24, 2000, Janina moved to Marquette to be nearer her family. Janina was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church, Marquette, and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Chester, Connecticut.

Survivors include two sons, Dimitrie “Mitch”ù (Sharon) Lazeren of Marquette and Richard (Terry) Lazeren of Atkinson, NH; daughter-in-law, Patricia Lazeren of South Windsor, CT; her grandchildren, Michael Lazeren, Cheryl (Sean) Turner, Joseph (Crail) Lazeren, Frank (Shelby) Lazeren, Janina (Andrew) Walsh, Amanda (Dylan) Childs, and Jeffery (Lauren Simard) Lazeren, Alexia (Leo) Barnaby, Jessica Lazeren, Heather (Hugh Sykes) Lazeren, and Greg (Katera) Lazeren; great-grandchildren, Paige, Sarah, Michael, Abby, and Spencer; a sister, Albina Yenda of New Britain, CT; and several nieces and nephews. Janina was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, Michael Lazeren in 1994; husband, Edward Majkowski in 2000; sons, Michael and Stanley Lazeren; granddaughters, Desere Lynn Lazeren and Amy Lazeren; a sister, Rose (the late Emil) Nasuta; brothers, Jon, Waclaw, Stanislaw, Antoni, and Wladyslaw Gudewicz; and brother-in-law, John Yenda.

The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Saturday, March 25, beginning at 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm Saturday afternoon with Rev. Greg Heikkala as celebrant. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be made at St. Joseph Cemetery, Chester, Connecticut.
