James ‘Jimmy’ Lafkas

MARQUETTE, MI. – James “Jimmy” Lafkas, 102, long time Marquette resident , passed away peacefully at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for veterans, Saturday morning, December 24, 2016. He was surrounded by his loving family and the caring staff of Jacobetti.

Jim was born November 23, 1914, in Negaunee, to greek immigrants, John and Margaret (Gavadas) Lafkas. In his early years Jim worked at the Bon Ton Cafe for his uncle, and was raised by his aunt when his parents and sister returned to Greece. Jim enlisted in the army in 1938, soon after that WWII broke out, he then served with General Patton’s Army in the German Theatre of operations. Following his honorable discharge in 1945 he returned to Marquette. In August of 1948 Jim married Elizabeth LaValley, they were married 50 years, when she preceded him in death in December 1998. Jim provided a “Wonderful life” for his family, working for relatives as a chef at the Coffee Cup diner. He knew everyone in town and they loved his cooking and his quick wit!

Jim is survived by three loving children, Margaret (Bob) Barnes of Cedar Falls, IA. Steven (sherri) Lafkas of West Bend, WI. and Christine (Glen) Seidl of De Pere, WI. He adored his seven grandchildren, Jesse,Lauren, Demetri, Theron, Darius, Michelle, and Richard. He was also very proud of his three great grandchildren, Destinie, Gavin, and Stella.

The family would like to express their heart felt thanks to the special staff on 1 West for the tender loving care the gave to their father.

The family will receive guests at the Swanson-Lunquist Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, beginning at 10:00 am until the time of service at 12:30 pm Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Leon Jarvis will preside. Jim will be laid to rest at Park Cemetery, then a reception will follow at the American Legion, 700 W. Bluff St, Marquette. The Family requests no flowers and that memorials be directed to D.J. Jacobetti Veterans Home “Activity Fund” 425 Fisher St. Marquette, Mi. 49855 Dad, we love you with all our hearts, and you will be deeply missed. Love you Papou!!!
