Hans Weigold

SAUX HEAD LAKE, MI. – Hans Weigold, age 96, Box 199 CR KB died Monday morning November 17, 2014 at the Jacobetti Veterans Home where he resided for the last month.

He was born on October 24, 1918 in Stuggart, Germany and came to the United States to Ellis Island at the age of 4. He lived in Brant, Michigan until the age of 18 and then came to the Upper Peninsula. He worked as a logger in the Gwinn area and for the WPA building M-28-E Highway. He married Ileen M. Basal on February 10, 1941.

Hans is survived by a daughter, Donna (Rick) Heikkila of Shot Point; 3 sons, Richard Weigold of Muskego, WI, Jerry (Carrol) Weigold of Marquette, Terry (Carmen) Weigold of Half Way Location; a sister, Barbara (Charles) Mott of Saginaw; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren & 1 great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ileen M. Basil, sisters Clara & Eleanor and a daughter-in-law, Carol (Anderson) Weigold.

He served in the US Army with the 119th Artillery Pacific Campaign during World War II from 3-1-41 until 6-14-45, 28 months of his service in Aleutian Islands on Adak Island.

After returning from WWII he worked at Cliffs Dow Chemical Company for 33 years, after retiring he went to work for Northland Builders of Marquette, during this time he also worked on the side as a commercial trap net fisherman & fur trapper. He loved to hunt, garden, cut wood, was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and served on the council, UP Whitetails and the UP Trappers Association.

Cremation will take place. A celebration of his life will be held in the summer 2015 with a memorial service at Calvary Lutheran Church and a graveside military service at the Park Cemetery.
