Jerome J. Harsch
GLEN HAVEN, WI. – Jerome J. “Jerry” Harsch was born in Glen Haven, WI on April 10, 1921. He passed away on November 24, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jean Kathleen (Jean Kay).
Jerry is survived by his six children; Daniel, Patrick, Kathleen, Jerilyn, Brian, Janet and their spouses. Jerry is also survived by his 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Jerry was the best family man he knew how to be.
Jerry and Jean moved to Norway, MI in the late 40’s and to Iron Mountain, MI in the mid 50’s. Over the years, he worked for Nick & Sons Caskets, Champion Construction Co., and K&G appliances. He was known for his honesty, integrity and his great sense of humor.
Jerry was an optimistic man who always enjoyed meeting and talking with people. He was an entrepreneur, who along with his wife, Jean Kay, and his son, Brian, started Jean Kay’s Pasties in Iron Mountain, MI. That legacy lives on with Jean Kay’s Pasties of Marquette, MI and Cousin Jenny’s of Traverse City, MI, owned by his daughter Jerilyn.
Jerry retired to Florida in the early 80’s, where he did several distinguished building projects with his son, Dan, and his daughter, Kathleen. Never one to be retired long, Jerry moved back to Michigan in the 90’s and spent 10 years working with his son, Brian, at Jean Kay’s Pasties. He made the best subs in town – with a lot of meat, cheese, and a slice of wisdom. His next retirement brought him back to Florida, where he worked for Lowe’s and had the distinction of being one of the oldest salespeople company wide. At 82, Jerry took on a new career as the owner of Jerry’s Recycling. He loved learning the new business and sense of accomplishment it gave him. His customers all respected his kindness and work ethic. His final retirement was in 2010.
Jerry also loved to travel. He made several trips to Europe to visit his newly discovered cousins in Luxembourg. His love of adventure stayed with him his whole life. As per his and Jean’s request, they will make on final trip to their beloved Ireland. Their children will take their ashes to the estuary of The River Shannon and sprinkle them into the current to be taken out to sea and become one with nature and God. It is with love that his family says goodbye. He may be gone, but he’s not forgotten.
A celebration of Life party will be held with friends and family at a later date.
