Sponsors needed for senior meals effort

MARQUETTE – Officials with the AMCAB Meals on Wheels program are hoping to raise enough money for 5,000 meals for homebound seniors in Marquette and Alger counties with a fundraising Harvest Pig Roast on Nov. 5 at the Lost Creek Community Center in Marquette.

Local chefs will prepare a harvest meal featuring a pig roast, chicken, and locally harvested foods along with a cash wine and beer bar. The Yooper Goddess will be there serving some of her special appetizers during the social hour. Entertainment is by the Kirsten Gustafson jazz trio. Sponsors are still needed. For more information or for tickets call the AMCAB office at 906-228-6522.

The Night of 5,000 Dinners

Feed the Need Fundraiser can be the opening to the giving season of the holidays. What better way to start the holiday season than by supporting homebound seniors who need our help? Every year, over 550 seniors in Marquette and Alger counties rely on Meals on Wheels to maintain their independence and remain in their own homes.

Federal and state funding provide less than half of what is needed to run the Meals on Wheels program, so more than half of the budget needs to be raised locally.

Senior millages, the United Way, senior donations, and many local grants help, but the remainder needs to be fundraised with events like this dinner.

The goal is to raise $17,500, enough to provide the local portion needed to fund 5,000 meals.

We are looking for sponsors to provide meals for seniors for a period of time ranging from a year (250 meals) down to three months (60 meals). Anyone sponsoring meals for a full year will receive two complimentary dinner tickets. Tickets are available now and only 140 will be sold.
