Balance class to be offered in Schoolcraft County

MANISTIQUE – A Matter of Balance class is being offered in Manistique starting in September.

Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater.

Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends.

A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent.

A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults.

Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls classes will be offered in Manistique on Mondays and Thursdays starting Sept. 10 and ending Oct, 5.

The class will be held at the site of the old rural health clinic (next to the Schoolcraft Fitness Center) from 4-6 p.m.

Program materials and snacks will be provided. Space is limited, call to register by dialing 2-1-1 or 1-800-338-7227.

Program adminstered by UPCAP with support from Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital. For more information, visit www.upcap.org
