GLADSTONE — August Mattson Squadron #71 Sons of the American Legion held an initiation ceremony at the Gladstone Post recently.

There were three Sons who were accepted for membership into the Squadron with 15 total new members in 2021.

The Michigan S.A.L. is experiencing a resurgence in membership across the state and here in the Upper Peninsula.

S.A.L. Membership includes males of all ages whose fathers or grandfathers served and were honorably discharged in the U.S. military.

Although the Sons has its own membership, the organization is not a separate entity. Rather, S.A.L. is a program of The American Legion. Many Legionnaires hold dual membership in the S.A.L.

Founded in 1932, Sons of The American Legion exists to honor the service and sacrifice of Legionnaires.

In a press release, Squadron #71 Sons Membership Chairman and 5th Zone Commander John Pickard reminds us as we celebrate special occasions with our loved ones, please remember to say a prayer for those brave men and women who continue to fight to preserve our freedom that we hold dear. Lift up our veteran heroes with love and honor. Support our military families with words of encouragement and unity. And do something extra for your community and those who are suffering.
