Rotary recognizes leaders

12 Deeds of Christmas Award Recipients: John Deatrick, Youth Leadership Award; Sally Steen, Community Leader Award; Sally Shaver, Rotary Service Award; and Mark Curran, Business Leader Award.

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Rotary Club annually recognizes leaders who give exceptional service to the community. Awards are presented at the Club’s Christmas meeting as the recipients embody the Spirit of Christmas. Recipients of the 2021 awards are:

≤ The Rotary Service Award was presented to Sally Shaver by Past President Judd Spray. She has been a member since 2002 and is in her second term on the club’s Board of Directors. She has served as chair of the respite committee and served on the contributions committee. Spray explained how she serves the club by taking care of the many details necessary for a smoothly functioning meeting.

≤ Sally Steen received the Community Leader Award from Past President Sally Davis. She mobilized the volunteer community response to the shortage of masks and other medical protective items early in the pandemic. Her “Masks for Marquette” Facebook page attracted 2,800 volunteers who made and distributed 50,000 pieces of protective equipment for healthcare workers and teachers. Principle helpers were Terry Wessels and Lila Jahnke.

≤ Receiving the Business Leader Award was Mark Curran from Dewey Jones. He is president of Curran and Co. which specializes in multi-family construction, rehabilitation, and management. It currently has 427 units in the area with Cedarville Townhomes being the flagship property. More recently, he founded Rippling River Resort which has increased tourist visitors in Marquette. He is very supportive of the Boy Scout program having served as Cubmaster in Cub Scout Pack 308, chartering Boy Scout Troop 302, and being an active parent in the Troop helping with projects and activities. Currently, he is on the Marquette County Board of Construction Appeals and recently served on the ad hoc housing committee for the City of Marquette.

He is supportive of the trails system in the area and supports fundraisers for the biking community. At the campground, 600 acres were put into permanent conservation status saving the trails for future generations.

He is a current member of the Homebuilders Association and served on its board for many years. He is supportive of Habitat for Humanity and many other organizations, especially those serving youth.

≤ Gwinn High School senior John Deatrick received the Youth Citizen Award from Judy Watson-Olson. He is very involved in community activities including his church where he and his brother developed the technological system to broadcast services during the pandemic and Scouting where he is very helpful with younger Scouts. He is a key member of the varsity tennis team serving as captain and as a volunteer instructor in junior tennis camps.He is an academically ambitious student taking college prep classes while also taking classes at Northern Michigan University and working at a local restaurant. He plays the piano at church and school events. His leadership style is described as “confidence, humility, and putting others first.”
