Negaunee Elks name Students of the Month

NEGAUNEE –The Negaunee Elks have announced their Students of the Month for January.

The Negaunee Elks Junior Student of the Month for January is Weston Yesney. Weston is the son of Amy Yesney and Ron Yesney and is an eighth grader at Negaunee Middle School.

While attending NMS, Weston has participated in quiz bowl, orchestra, chorus, cross country, was on the football team and participated in environmental adventures. In his spare time, Weston loves to downhill ski, play baseball, snowmobile, fish, hunt, go four wheeling and cut grass for people in the summer. Weston has been on the honor roll many times, won gold in downhill ski racing, and has been moved up to play with the older kids on the legion team for baseball. When he graduates, Weston would like to go into the Marines and then become a police officer. His dream is to become a professional athlete in the NFL or the MLB.

The Negaunee Elks January Student of the Month is Amara Wallner, a senior at Negaunee High School and the daughter of Jason Wallner and Sara Carter. Amara is a member of the National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl team, varsity volleyball team, is team captain for the Ishpeming-Negaunee swim team, a member of the track team and was a member of the NHS Forensics team in 2019. Amara’s hobbies include snowshoeing, downhill skiing, hiking, biking, fishing and gardening. Amara has received many special honors, including making the honor roll each quarter at NHS, several NHS Department Awards including Science in 2019, Math in 2018, Business in 2019 and 2020, English in 2020 and has been awarded the Excellence in Education Award in 2017, 2018, and 2019. In addition, Amara’s team placed second in Michigan Technological University’s 2019 Bio-athalon, she is the record holder for the 200 Freestyle relay at the IHS Pool and is a 2020 Michigan Master Angler for brown trout. Upon graduation, Amara plans to major in finance at either the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota or Michigan State University.
