Bay MEA announces scholarships

Kali Kinnunen and Hayley Weston

ESCANABA — Full-time faculty members of the Michigan Education Association at Bay College announce the 2020-2021 recipients of the Faculty Association Scholarship. The Faculty Scholarship was established within the Bay College Foundation to recognize the academic achievement and unmet financial need of Bay College students. Two $500.00 scholarships are awarded annually.

Kali Kinnunen and Hayley Weston were selected by the Faculty Association as the recipients for this year’s awards.

Kali is pursuing a Practical Nursing certificate, with future plans of earning a Registered Nursing degree. Hayley will graduate from Bay College with an Associate of Science in Pre-Veterinarian Medicine this summer and plans to transfer to Northern Michigan University.

To be eligible for the award, students must have completed 24 or more Bay College credits with a 3.0 GPA or higher and have applied for Bay College scholarships. The Faculty Association Scholarship is unique in that the student selection occurs after the regular scholarship award process has been completed. Faculty select the recipients from a pool of academically deserving students who still have some unmet financial need not covered by other scholarships or financial aid.

Molly Campbell, Faculty Association Scholarship Committee Chair and Association President, explains “The Faculty Association Scholarship was established to reward Bay College students that are working hard to complete their degree. The pandemic has added many stresses for students, and scholarships make a huge difference and help keep students on track. The Faculty Association wants to ensure students reach their goal of receiving a college degree and/or certificate.”

Students are encouraged to apply for Bay College Foundation scholarships by March 15 at baycollege.edu/scholarships.
