All’s Welles at meeting

Welles, an English lab retriever belonging to Michael Rutledge, was the center of attention at the recent meeting of the Lac Vieux Desert Trail Society, N.S.C.A.R. at the Big Boy restaurant. Rutledge, a 22-year veteran of the Army, is the coordinator of Student Veteran Services at Northern Michigan University. He talked to the group about the differences between service, emotional support and therapy dogs and demonstrated how Welles picks things up by dropping his keys on the floor. This is one of the tasks that Rutledge, who broke his spine and pelvis during a parachute jump, finds hard to do. Pictured in back are Anna, Russ and Ray Modell, Piper Smart, and Michael Rutledge. Rodney Modell, Molly Wilson, Katie, Melody and Danielle Nowicki surround Welles.
