Alex Mars honored at HATS Off recognition ceremony

MARS

MARQUETTE – Alex Mars was one of 350 high-achieving students in Michigan who were honored on March 22 at the 21st annual HATS Off Recognition Ceremony, a statewide awards ceremony to recognize the top-scoring students who participated in Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search. The students who were recognized have received extremely high scores on a college entrance exam, either the SAT or the ACT, while in sixth, seventh, or eighth grade.

The HATS Off program partners include the Gifted and Talented Education office at Michigan State University, the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University, the Honors College of Michigan State University, and the Michigan Department of Education.

The SAT and ACT tests are administered annually to approximately 2,250 Michigan middle school students who demonstrate high academic ability. These SAT and ACT tests are the same tests utilized by high school juniors and seniors as a part of the college admissions process. Northwestern Midwest Academic Talent Search data indicate that participating middle school students score, on average, very close to the average score of college-bound high school seniors nationally. The middle school students recognized at the HATS Off awards ceremony have achieved scores comparable to the top 1-20% range of college-bound high school seniors’ scores.

Nationally, over 100,000 middle school students participate annually in this research-based Talent Search model. Eight Midwestern states, including Michigan, participate through the Midwest Academic Talent Search at Northwestern University.

This process seeks to identify students who reason very well in math and verbal areas, to assess their level of ability in each area, and to recommend educational options that are available both in and outside the school. Students are selected for this process through a parent or other adult’s nomination, or through achieving a high score on grade-level state/national tests.
