Alger County charity honors student-athletes

SYDNEY EMARD

MUNISING — The Eric and Danielle Beverly Scholarship Fund announced Daryn Johnson (Munising High School) and Sydney Emard (Superior Central Schools) as the winners of its 2019 scholarship awards. Established in 2007 for Munising High School students, the annual program was expanded in 2018 with an additional award for graduating seniors from other Alger County schools. The fund has awarded $7,500 in scholarships to date.

Daryn, daughter of Allison and Donald “Buzz” Johnson, graduated at the top of her Munising High School class. A tri-athlete, National Honor Society member, and active member of her church, Daryn believes that athletics have instilled principles of teamwork and the strength of character to overcome obstacles.

She will realize her lifelong dream of attending the University of Michigan where she’ll major in health sciences.

Sydney, daughter of Carla Emard and Howard Emard, began her freshman year of high school as a varsity basketball and volleyball athlete. She was eventually voted team captain, a role that she credits for helping her develop strong leadership, time management, and conflict-resolution skills. She will pursue a degree in medical imaging at Northern Michigan University.

The fund’s namesakes, Eric and Danielle (Tiernan) Beverly, are excited about this year’s award winners. “I truly believe that the lessons Eric and I learned as high school and college athletes prepared us in some ways for our battle with breast cancer,” Danielle said. “We’re grateful for the support we continue to receive and are incredibly proud to honor the hard work of this year’s scholars!”

DARYN JOHNSON

Danielle excelled first as a student-athlete at Munising High School, then at Grand Valley State University, and as an intern with the University of Michigan Football program during her graduate studies at Wayne State University.

A graduate of Miami University and former National Football League athlete, Eric prioritized education and attended the Harvard Business School’s NFL Business Management and Entrepreneurial Program. He is currently director of operations, Professional Sports Clinic Programs, at Tulane University.

The Eric and Danielle Beverly Scholarship Fund, administered by the Alger County Regional Community Foundation, is a program of The Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation – a charity that provides financial and psycho-social support services for Alger County and Metro Atlanta families facing breast cancer.
