Melissa Erickson, Eric Hill named NICE Community School District Teachers of the Year

ISHPEMING — Melissa Erickson and Eric Hill are the NICE Community School District’s Teachers of the Year for the 2017-18 school year.

Erickson has been teaching for 14 years, the last nine in the NICE district. She is a graduate of Marquette Senior High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University. She holds a master’s in reading instruction.

An elementary school teacher, Erickson said she believes that making personal connections with her students and their families is the most important part of her job. She works to create a classroom that is filled with trust, compassion, teamwork and joy.

Erickson and her husband, Ryan, have a son Wyatt, 4.

Hill is a teacher at Westwood High School. He has been teaching for 11 years, the last nine in the NICE district.

He also is the WHS track and field coach and cross-country coach. He has coached hockey throughout his adult life.

Hill earned a bachelor’s degree from Lake Superior State University and a master’s in administration from NMU.

He and his wife, Shalyn, have two children, Bazil, age 4, and Zaya, age 2.
