Local charity honors Alger County students for academic, athletic excellence

MUNISING — The Eric and Danielle Beverly Scholarship Fund today announced Alec Blank (Munising High School) and Tori Tyner (Superior Central Schools) as the winners of its 2018 scholarship awards. Since its inception in 2006, the fund has awarded $6,500 to outstanding Munising High school seniors. 2018 marks the first year that an additional award was offered to students at other Alger County schools as well.

Alec, son of Libby and Steve Blank (Munising), has established himself as great leader both in the classroom and on the playing field. His accolades include National Honor Society membership and All-Conference recognition in football and basketball. Diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at the age of 10, Alec’s perseverance in overcoming chronic illness recently earned him the 2018 Gil Heard Award from the UPSSA. Alex will pursue a degree in physical therapy at Finlandia University in Hancock.

Tori, daughter of Patricia and Terry Tyner, Jr. (Limestone), is known for her superior work ethic, leadership, and stellar academic performance. In fact, she graduated at the top of her class and was Class Valedictorian. She blazed a trail as one of the first female students to join the football team and has received numerous honors including an induction into the National Honor Society. Tori plans to pursue a nursing degree at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids.

The fund’s namesakes, Eric and Danielle (Tiernan) Beverly, are excited about this year’s award winners. “Eric and I were both student-athletes in high school and college,” Danielle said. “We’re grateful for the support that helped us pursue our academic goals and incredibly blessed to now be able to help other young student athletes pursue theirs.” Danielle excelled first as a student-athlete at Grand Valley State University, then as an intern with the University of Michigan Football program during her graduate studies at Wayne State University.

A graduate of Miami University and former National Football League athlete, Eric prioritized education and attended the Harvard Business School’s NFL Business Management and Entrepreneurial Program. He is currently director of operations, Professional Sports Clinic Programs, at Tulane University.

The Eric and Danielle Beverly Scholarship Fund, administered by the Alger County Regional Community Foundation, is a program of The Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation – a charity that provides financial and psycho-social support services for Alger County and Metro Atlanta families facing breast cancer.
