Donations help fund work on IM gymnasiums

IRON MOUNTAIN — Work is being completed on two gymnasiums at Iron Mountain Schools with the help of donations from three organizations. The district received $100,000 from Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools, $40,000 from the Tom Johnson Memorial Fund and $80,000 from the Iron Mountain Sports Booster Club. The school’s portion is about $78,000. The high school gymnasium in the Izzo Mariucci Building is receiving $164,417 in renovations and the Central School gym $133,759 in work. HOUGHTON — A Michigan Technological University student group’s display inviting students to spray paint messages on a replica of the Berlin Wall drew controversy Friday after students added comments attacking transgender people and other groups. The student group Young Americans for Freedom had set up the display on Walker Lawn to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall as part of its annual Freedom Week celebration. Trail groups give updates at session

HOUGHTON — The Department of Natural Resources and local trail groups gave updates on their work and upcoming projects at the Wake Up Keweenaw breakfast meeting Wednesday. U.P. trails coordinator Ron Yesney pointed to several snowmobile trail outages soon to be reopened after repairs to damage caused by the Father’s Day Flood. First is the Lake Linden-to-Dollar Bay trail, which is scheduled to reopen on Dec. 1.
