CWD again detected in wild deer in northern Wisconsin

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on Friday confirmed the first positive test result for chronic wasting disease in a wild deer in Menominee County. Menominee County’s boundaries are the same as the boundaries of the Menominee Indian Reservation. Current tribal regulations ban the baiting of deer on the reservation, and the tribe has indicated that the ban will remain in effect. City begins process to expand Light Manufacturing

ESCANABA — The Escanaba City Council unanimously approved a request to hold a second reading, public hearing and potentially adopt the “Light Manufacturing Zoning District Ordinance of 2024,” which would change the boundaries of a light manufacturing district already in the city. The proposed expanded zoning includes land north of 9th Avenue and east of North 30th Street in the area including Fastenal, bordered by the rail road track to the east. Kwik Trip gets approval for Escanaba store

ESCANABA — Kwik Trip is coming to Escanaba in 2025 after its site plan approval. On Thursday night, the Escanaba Planning Commission unanimously approved a special land use permit and proposed site plan for Kwik Trip’s new location at 501 North Lincoln Road, in Escanaba. Kwik Trip Development Manager Nate Byom says the company plans to break ground in June of 2025, with the goal of completing the project by late fall to early winter of 2025. Markkanen rejects amendment for gun buyback bills

HOUGHTON — State Rep. Greg Markkanen on Tuesday voted against proposed amendments regarding the disposition of firearms. Bills 4144-6146 would require the destruction of most guns seized as part of buyback program, which Markkanen says would prohibit the Michigan State Police from selling or trading firearms obtained through a buyback. Houghton decides on health insurance

HOUGHTON — The Houghton City Council meeting was held on Wednesday to disclose reports and pass a few resolutions. While the city is busy with snow removal and sand placement, City Manager Eric Waara said he and others working for the city have already begun discussions on springtime projects. These projects that are being formed include improvements at Bridge View Park. Waara said that he and public works would like to be prepared to begin springtime projects as soon as the winter ends.
