Bells to ring to honor memories

MARQUETTE — At this time last year, just over 200,000 people had died of COVID-19 and church bells rang to honor their memory.

This year, that number has surpassed 700,000 (as per CDC and WHO). Each death represents a grieving family, a loss suffered, the absence of a loved one felt.

Sunday, Nov. 7 is All Saints Day in the Christian church when many congregations remember their beloved dead from their church family. This year, we also remember the many who have died during this pandemic.

Bishop Katherine Finegan of the Northern Great Lakes Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America invites everyone to honor the memory of those who have died. Congregations wishing to participate will toll their funeral bell for five minutes at noon CT/1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 7.

A release from the synod says: “When you hear the bells toll, you are invited to pause in whatever you are doing and say a prayer for all those who mourn.”
