Volunteers needed for beach, trail cleanup today

MUNISING — In celebration of National Public Lands Day today, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is hosting a beach and trail cleanup day.

The public is invited to help from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. as trash is picked up on favorite beaches, overlooks and trails in the park.

The first 50 volunteers will receive a free voucher for entrance to any National Park. If interested, sign up ahead of time by calling: 906-387-3700 or 906-494-2660. Same day volunteers are also welcome.

On the day of the event, volunteers will meet at the Munising Falls Visitor Center (1505 Sand Point Road, Munising) OR Grand Sable Visitor Center (E21090 County Road H58, Grand Marais). Not sure which visitor center to go to? Call ahead and NPS can help you choose.

Trash bags, gloves, and pickers will be provided. Participants should dress for the weather, bring sunscreen, bug spray, lunch and/or snacks, and your own water bottles.

Trash of all kinds washes up on the beaches of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore or is dropped on our trails and overlooks. Cigarette butts, food wrappers, aluminum cans, and more litter our shared public lands, detracting from the natural beauty and hurting wildlife that call this place home.

National Public Lands Days was established in 1994 and is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer event for public lands. This event is held annually on the fourth Saturday in September and brings out thousands of volunteers to help restore and improve public lands around the country.
