Cause of church fire in Bay Mills under investigation

BAY MILLS — Officials are investigating the cause of a fire that took place in Bay Mills Township early Wednesday morning.

At approximately 1:23 a.m., Chippewa County Central Dispatch received reports of a fire at Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Mission Catholic Church located at 12012 W. Lakeshore Drive in the township.

Fire departments from Bay Mills, Superior and Dafter townships all responded to the blaze. No injuries were reported, and the fire remains under investigation through the Bay Mills Police Department and the Michigan State Police fire marshal.

BMPD is asking the community to remain clear of the scene, as it remains an active investigation and is not safe. Crews continue to deal with hotspots as of Wednesday.

The church building, opened in December 1967, is deemed to be a total loss, officials said.

More information will be released upon completion of the investigation.

Bay Mills Emergency Connection Ambulance and U.S. Border Patrol also assisted at the scene.
