PORTAGE TOWNSHIP -- A 73-year-old man is dead after a multi-vehicle accident in Houghton County early Friday afternoon.

The Houghton County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene on Memorial Road near Canal Road in Portage Township. Preliminary investigation determined that the 73-year-old male, identified as David Sundberg from Ahmeek, was traveling southbound on Memorial Road when he lost control and crossed into the path of a northbound delivery truck driven by a 56-year-old male from Hubbell, according to a news release.

The delivery truck driver attempted to avoid Sundberg's vehicle but was unable to. Sundberg's vehicle was then struck by a second vehicle driven by a 66-year-old male from Lake Linden.

Sundberg and the delivery truck driver were both transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital by Mercy Ambulance for treatment. Sundberg passed away from injuries sustained in the crash.

The sheriff's office says speed and poor/icy road conditions were contributing factors in the incident, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The crash also caused multiple other vehicle crashes within the vicinity.

Assisting the sheriff's office at the scene were the Houghton Police Department, Hancock Police Department, Michigan Technological University Public Safety and Police Services, Houghton City Fire Department, Hurontown Fire/Rescue, Mercy Ambulance, Dave's Towing and Superior Service.
