ST. IGNACE — A Lower Peninsula man has died from his injuries after a fatal snowmobile accident occurred on New Year’s Day about a quarter-mile west of Borgstrom Road in Hudson Township.

The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office, which is in investigating the incident, were called to the scene of a single-vehicle snowmobile accident with injury south of U.S. 2 and near the Lake Michigan shore at around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The man, identified as Norman James Bass of downstate Goodrich, was operating an unfamiliar snowmobile, which might have been a contributing factor, according to police.

Bass was transported to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Alcohol and speed are not considered to a factor in the incident, officials indicated.

No further information will be released at this time, police said.
