Accident victim ID’d

MARQUETTE — The victim of a fatal single-vehicle crash on Superior Road in Portage Township on Friday has been identified.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver and sole occupant in the vehicle as Steven Long, 59.

Officials believe Long overcorrected coming back onto the road after his vehicle’s passenger-side tires left the roadway at about 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

The vehicle crossed the roadway into a ditch where it traveled for approximately 15 feet before striking a culvert and bouncing over the driveway. The vehicle traveled through a residential yard for approximately 75 feet before striking a large tree.

Long was extricated from the vehicle by Hurontown Fire and Rescue jaws of life and pronounced dead at the scene as a result of his injuries.

The incident is still under investigation.

Houghton City Police, the Hurontown Fire Department and Superior Service Towing assisted at the scene.
