Police ID victims in fatal Ironwood Township crash

IRONWOOD — Police have released the names of the individuals involved in the traffic accident that led to the death of two young women in Ironwood Township Saturday.

According to the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office, the two women pronounced dead at the scene were 18-year-old Lauren Powless and 15-year-old Madeline Jackson, both of Ironwood.

Zachery Hammon, 20, also of Ironwood, was transported by Beacon Ambulance to the Aspirus Grand View Hospital, where he was treated and released, police said.

The accident occurred along Lake Road near Powers Road in Ironwood Township around 2:32 a.m. Saturday.

Deputies arrived on the scene of the crash shortly after it occurred and located a vehicle that had run off the roadway and struck a tree, police said. The vehicle sustained severe damage and Hammon had walked to a nearby residence to report the accident.

Police said this morning that they could not comment on who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident, as the investigation remains ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post, Beacon Ambulance and Gogebic County Victim Services.
